Reduce your carbon impact with Inevidesk

It should be common knowledge that virtual desktop infrastructure is more efficient to run than traditional physical workstations. Less components, less power usage, more efficient use of resources all combine to enable less carbon intensive technology. That much is common sense.

Last year we published our comparison with HP’s Z rackmount solution in terms of rack density and power usage, proving incontrovertibly that on those two significant cost measures alone, Inevidesk VDI was hugely more efficient.

This year we wanted to dig further into the carbon impact of Inevidesk and commissioned a report by a leading UK sustainability consultant to assess and compare the environmental performance of Inevidesk to traditional physical workstations.

The headline is that Inevidesk generates 62% less carbon than traditional physical workstations.

The scope of the assessment was:

  • One full Inevidesk pod of seven mid-spec vdesks using average power draw of 450w compared to seven physical workstations of matching specification drawing 169w power each

  • Both solutions situated in a datacentre providing the same level of resources

  • Examining the ‘use phase’ only over the period of five years with systems running 24 hours

It is a relatively simple assessment and not exhaustive. It does not factor in the embodied carbon of components from manufacture, delivery, packaging etc. But that is somewhat unnecessary as we know that physical workstations use more components overall and therefore will be more impactful.

It does not include connecting devices, but in a world that now prizes hybrid, flexible and distance working there are many variables that could be taken into account such as travel, on premises infrastructure, office space utilisation and more.

There are almost endless factors here and - frankly - any organisation should be reviewing their entire operations in terms of carbon impact should this be of importance to them. IT infrastructure however will always remain a major element of an organisation’s environmental impact - especially in the world of powerful design computing. So employing a solution that can reduce your emissions for workstation use by over 50% should be a major factor in decision making.

With that being said, carbon impact cannot be the only factor. The solution has to be affordable. It has to be highly performant. It has to offer increased flexibility and resiliency. It has to adequately support your organisation’s business and employees, as well as its sustainability goals.

Of course, we have that covered too.
